Food Technology at Riversides
At KS2 and KS3 all pupils have the opportunity to learn food preparation and cooking skills. They develop an understanding of healthy eating habits and find out about the origin of many foodstuffs. The most popular part of the lesson is the taste test at the end of the practical – if we have time, when pupils use different sensory analysis words to describe the product.
At KS3 and KS4 we have been following the BTEC Home Cooking Skills course and several of our pupils have achieved Levels 1 and 2. We are now however developing the GCSE Home Economics – Food and Nutrition course and we now hope to enter pupils for this qualification. The focus of this course is on further developing practical planning, cooking and evaluation skills alongside a deeper understanding of nutrition and healthy eating.
